This is usually conveyed as “beats per minute” or “steps per minute” and historically is associated with the rate of march for different armies at different points in time.
It’s also important to note that different Time Signatures indicate different ways of thinking about tempo. How Time Signatures function also changes over time and its important to understand this difference in order to decide how to most accurately perform the different beatings and tunes.
